Have you ever said something/done something that you instantly regretted? You hurt someone carelessly and then when you tried to rectify the situation, it couldn't be undone? Sometimes even though you can get forgiveness, you can never erase or fix the damage you've created.
I did such a thing this evening. Without really meaning to, I drew attention to a flaw of my sister's. It wasn't meant to be anything but I clumsily brought up all her sensitivity and insecurity by pointing it out. I don't know how I did it...I pride myself on protecting my sister, as a big sister should, not being cruel. But without thinking, I was much more cruel than any stranger could have been.
No amount of apologies from me can change it and even if she forgets about how it happened, she won't forget the humiliation and pain that I caused. And I caused it just be being stupid and careless.
So the lesson learned from this, and this is something we all should heed, is to really think before you speak. It may sound ridiculous to have to check your words but words can be weapons when we throw them away imprudently.
Yes, words can be weapons aimed right at the heart of the one you love.
