The Hot Friend

Everyone has at least one friend who is of the opposite sex and hot. You know who I am talking about; the friend that makes you think "damn, if we weren't friends I'd like to [insert dirty thought here]." I have one that I saw the other night and it made me think about why we have the hot friend and what purpose they serve in our lives.

Thought #1: Seeing them is exciting. When you go out with the hot friend, it is almost like a date. You take more time getting ready, check that your hair (and your boobs) look good in the mirror on the way out the door and feel maybe a little nervous that they'll like your appearance. If they tell you that you look good, you smile big and feel like you've won a little beauty contest because the hot friend is hot after all so if they approve that means something. You also hope that you run into frenemies when out with the hot friend because they might be jealous thinking that you are dating such a catch. Being mistaken as a couple when you are with the hot friend is a coup, when with your average joe friends just annoying.

Thought #2: They are fun to look at. Face it; their face (& body) are the biggest attraction. Everyone loves eye candy and you get to spend an entire evening half-listening to what they say while you gaze at their beautiful bone structure and fantastic hair. Or maybe drop your eyes to look at the way their bicep muscles strain their t-shirt. It is practically a cardio workout just being around them, especially if they where cologne/perfume and smell as delicious as they look.

Thought #3: There is always the possibility that they could go from hot friend to hot more than friend. Maybe it is a drunken make out session or maybe you two could really be a great couple but the intrinsic appeal of the hot friend is that they could be into you too. I mean they like you and like hanging out with you so maybe there can be more than sharing the popcorn at the movie - like sharing the covers of your bed. You'll never make a move, of course, because you feel the hot friend is out of your league but you hope and pray that one day, whether fuelled by alcohol or not, they'll up the ante and make you a friend with benefits.

The thing that came to me when I was thinking about all of this was that maybe the situation is reversed and we never see it. Maybe your hot friend thinks you're the hot one and is waiting for you to show interest or maybe it is just the others in your group of friends go on about how damn sexy you are. It is cool to think that you could be the desirable one...so next time you are hanging out one-on-one with a member of the opposite sex ask yourself, "Is it me or them that is the hot friend?"
